The Americas consists of North America and the South American states.
South Americans states have different countries and non of them are call America. North America consists of United States of America and Canada.
Since the USA are the only country with America, they can call themselves americans.
Thats my interpretation anyways.

with all the various version of english. it is up to the country to define and use the words lor.like the difference between British and US English.
